Blogging tips for the beginner.

It seems like most everyone has their own blog nowadays.  Bookworms, foodies, physics professors…everyone is making noise in cyberspace.  Despite the competition, a blog is still a wonderful way to get your ideas noticed, and to connect you to a wider audience.  Here are some tips for getting started and standing out among the crowd:

1.Do your research:  Find blogs you enjoy and start taking notes.

2.Find your niche: After you’ve read the blogs in your subject area, envision your ideal audience.

3.Start writing: Brainstorm and come up with a few post ideas right away and stick them in the archives.

4.Find your blogging personality. Keep things conversational and write in the first person: talk directly to your readers.  Whether they hail from New Zealand or New Mexico, keep it chatty and informal.

5.Short and sweet: Try to keep your posts to a few paragraphs.  Write too much, and you risk losing the attention of your readers.

6.Pace yourself: Write as regularly as you can, but don’t feel pressured to write every day, 7 days a week.  Some days you’ll have less to say than others—keep a few extra posts in your back pocket, just in case you’re stumped.

7.Set realistic goals for yourself: Blogging stardom doesn’t happen overnight.  Keep at it! Patience and persistence are your most valuable tools in growing your readership.
