One of the best ways to professionally network is by attending conferences—whether you’re a librarian, professor, musician, or biologist, conferences are an excellent way to meet your colleagues, share ideas, and grow relationships. Here are some tips for making your next conference your best one yet:
.Do your homework: Check out the schedule before the show starts and decide which programs and workshops you’ll attend—getting organized is half the battle!
.Participate, engage, and don't be shy: Ask questions and talk to the presenters. Introduce yourself and engage in conversation with others in the room. You might be surprised to find what you have in common.
.Don’t overdo it: Make sure you allow yourself enough gaps in your itinerary to rest, and let what you’ve learned sink in.
.Pack enough business cards: It’s better to have extra than to run out.
.Map out your route around the exhibit hall: Check out the vendors you’re most interested in chatting up, and pay a visit to their booth.
.Connect with your colleagues outside of the exhibit hall: Dinners, lunches, drinks, even a quick cup of coffee can help you build lasting relationships with your peers.
.Take the connections you've made and leverage them-- Find your contacts and continue your conversation post conference. Send the person a message and simply say hello.
.Most importantly, remember to have fun! Whether you’re in a new city, or your hometown, conferences should be an enjoyable experience. Go in with a positive attitude and you’re sure to maximize your experience.
